A deep and troubling sense of fragmentation—a vertical splitting of experience—has come to define the spirit of our time.
We see it in children who withdraw from school, who “lie flat,” or who turn against themselves in despair—convinced that a single measure of academic performance determines whether they are a “good” or “failed” human being, and thus seals their fate in university, work, and life. We see it in parents who, in quiet desperation, are willing to do everything for their children—feed them, clothe them, carry them—so long as they succeed academically.
我们也看到,从“必须恋爱结婚”到“不恋爱、不结婚、不生娃”,从改革开放的经济腾飞到如今的经济转型……We see it in the tension between social expectation and refusal: between the imperative to date, marry, and build a family, and the growing movement to step outside these very bonds. We see it in the arc from the economic vitality of the Reform and Opening-Up era to the uncertainties of today’s transition.
And we feel it even more sharply in the post-pandemic world—amid the rapid rise of AI, the escalating crises of climate change, and the intensifying conflicts unfolding across the globe. Fragmentation reveals itself as extremity: a hardening into “black-and-white” thinking, an erosion of our capacity to hold complexity, a breakdown in our ability to integrate what is different, uncertain, or in tension. It is experienced as a loss of resilience—an inner and outer world that feels increasingly unsafe, disorienting, and saturated with fear. How are we to understand this reality? Where can we turn? And what might it mean to remain human within it?
Amid this landscape of uncertainty—across individuals, families, communities, institutions, and societies—the 2026 IGRC International Group Relations Conference (held online, in both Chinese and English) offers a temporary learning institution. Here, within a carefully held and relatively safe environment created by the conference staff, participants are invited into an experiential process of learning. Through participation in the conference’s events, one engages not only in thinking, but in experiencing, observing, reflecting, and making meaning together. This is an opportunity to deepen awareness of both conscious and unconscious dynamics; to explore, from an international and systemic perspective, how we might hold difference without collapse, integrate across cultures without erasure, and take root in ways that allow for genuine freedom—even in a fragmented world.
And so, we ask—of this vast and uncertain world: Who, ultimately, holds the reins of destiny?
Come join us in this exploration.
